Jayi Rajaguru:

Short Biography of Jayi Rajaguru

Jayi Rajaguru fought and fought until the last breath against the British.  He was born on October 29, 1739, in the village of Harekrishnapur in Puri district.  His teachings were completed by the scholars of Emmar Math and Govardhan Math.  He remained unmarried for life.  In the year 1780, he was appointed Rajguru at the royal court of Divyasingh Dev II, king of Khordha.  He also received a ministerial post.

He made every effort to establish the Khordha dynasty as the ruler of Utkal.  He was strengthening Baruneigarh and training the Paika(a caste) for war in Khordha.  When Odisha came under British rule in 1803, the British began to collect taxes from the kings.  Outraged, Rajaguru vowed never to bow to the British.

As the British tried to seize Khordha by force, he formed a large army in 1804 and attacked the British.  The war has been going on for a long time.  Eventually the British succeeded in arresting the Rajaguru from Khordha fort.  He was first held in Cuttack and later in Medinipur Jail.  He was brutally murdered in 6th December 1806.
