As part of the Living Landscape Program implemented by NIRMAN , a field visit was conducted to Kandakora and Kadalichuan villages under Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district, Odisha. The purpose of the visit was to understand the community’s collective efforts in natural resource management and the functioning of the Multi-Actor Platform (MAP) at the village level.

🤝 Learning from the Community

During the interaction, villagers, community leaders, and members of the Community Forest Resource Management Committee (CFRMC) shared their experiences and insights about the MAP process. They explained how the platform brings together different stakeholders to discuss local challenges, prioritize development needs, and find collaborative solutions. This participatory approach has strengthened coordination, enhanced problem-solving capacity, and ensured inclusive decision-making.

🌿 The Forest–Agriculture Connection

Villagers also highlighted the interdependence between forest and agriculture in their daily lives. They described how forests provide essential resources such as food, fodder, fuelwood, and income opportunities, while also maintaining soil fertility and water balance. Sustainable forest management has thus become a foundation for both agricultural productivity and ecological stability.

👥 NIRMAN’s Role and Coordination

Field staff from NIRMAN were present throughout the visit, ensuring smooth coordination and logistical arrangements. Their support enabled meaningful interaction between the visitors and local community members, making the discussion more effective and outcome-oriented.

🌾 Key Takeaways

The visit provided valuable insights into how community-led institutions such as the CFRMC and Multi-Actor Platform empower rural communities to manage natural resources collectively. It reaffirmed the importance of initiatives under the Living Landscape Program in promoting sustainable livelihoods, ecosystem conservation, and community resilience across tribal regions like Rayagada.
